EU organic logo and its perception by consumers Organic Eprints
Zander, Katrin; Padel, Susanne; Zanoli, Raffaele.
Purpose – With the introduction of the mandatory European Union (EU) organic logo for all organic food products in 2010, the European Commission aimed at fostering the internal organic food market. This needs consumers’ knowledge of the logo. According to earlier research consumers’ knowledge of the EU organic logo is low. Thus, the purpose of this paper is to elicit consumers’ attitudes towards organic certification and labelling and to develop recommendations on how to improve consumers’ knowledge of the EU organic logo. Design/methodology/approach – By means of an online survey with 3,000 participants in six European countries, knowledge of the logo and attitudes towards organic farming and European labelling, as well as organic food purchase...

Quanto vale il marchio bio? Un’indagine edonimetrica Organic Eprints
Zanoli, Raffaele; Naspetti, Simona; Hamm, Ulrich; Janssen, Meike.

Communicating Ethical Arguments to Organic Consumers: A Study Across Five European Countries Organic Eprints
Naspetti, Simona; Zanoli, Raffaele.
Additional ethical claims were tested with mock organic egg labels in five EU countries. The attitudes towards the advertising labels were assessed by multiple copy testing measures. A total of 156 individual responses were analysed. The study confirms the difficulty of conducting advertising research in a multicultural framework, and shows that additional local/ regional claims can reinforce the appeal of organic products .

Measuring the risk of non-compliance in Italian organic farms with parametric and non parametric models Organic Eprints
Gambelli, Danilo; Solfanelli, Francesco; Zanoli, Raffaele.
Certification is an essential feature for organic products, and is based on controls/inspections to verify compliance with EU Reg. CE 834/07. Implementing a risk based inspection system can contribute to an effective and efficient organic control system, hence improving organic farming relative competitiveness. This study is part of the CERCOST EU project, and analyses data from inspections on a sample of Italian organic farms, aiming at the identification of management and structural risk factors contributing to the occurrence of non-compliances. Risk analysis is based on the estimation of both parametric and non-parametric models using negative binomial panel estimators and Bayesian network modelling.

Analysis of non-compliances in the organic certification system in Turkey Organic Eprints
Zanoli, Raffaele; Gambelli, Danilo; Bruschi, Viola.
Organic farming in Turkey is experiencing a strong growth in recent years, with a particular attention to export towards Europe. International and domestic trade opportunities require an efficient control system for organic products. In this paper we analyse the data from inspections of two European control bodies in Turkish farms to analyse risk patterns of non-compliance with the organic regulation. A proportion test is performed to identify the types of crops that are more likely related to non-compliant operators.

How to understand the complexity of product quality and the challenges in differentiating between organically and conventionally grown products – exemplified by fresh and heat-processed carrots (Daucus carota L.) Organic Eprints
Seljåsen, Randi; Kristensen, Hanne Lakkenborg; Kretzschmar, Ursula; Birlouez, I; Paoletti, F; Lauridsen, Charlotte; Wyss, Gabriela S.; Busscher, Nicolaas; Mengheri, Elena; Sinesio, F.; Zanoli, Raffaele; Vairo, Daniela; Beck, Alexander; Kahl, J..
Quality traits are highly focused upon in the marketing of organic food products. There is a need to define and measure quality as consumers seem to have preconceived notions about the superior health value and taste of organic compared to non-organic products. A commonly held opinion among many consumer groups is that organic farming guarantees optimum quality, despite the fact that this remains unproven. The aim of this paper is to contribute to a better understanding of the complexity of quality traits in a plant-based food product, using carrots as an example. Selected designated quality aspects are presented to describe the complexity of quality and discuss the challenges of using these aspects in differentiating between organic and conventional...

Consumer concerns regarding additional ethical attributes of organic food Organic Eprints
Zander, Katrin; Hamm, Ulrich; Freyer, Bernhard; Goesssinger, Katharina; Naspetti, Simona; Padel, Susanne; Stolz, Hanna; Stolze, Matthias; Zanoli, Raffaele.
In a world where more and more organic products are mass produced, and where most consumers have little – if any – contact with the organic farmers who have produced their food, many people feel that the underlying principles of the organic movement are coming under threat. According to our research consumers are mostly interested in additional ethical attributes like “higher animal welfare standards”, “regional/local production” and “fair producer prices” and they are willing to pay more for organic products which are produced following these higher standards. This gives producers the opportunity to differentiate their products in the organic market. When communicating these additional ethical attributes of organic food producers must take care to use a...

Assessing Risk Factors in the Organic Control System: Evidence from Inspection Data in Italy Organic Eprints
Zanoli, Raffaele; Gambelli, Danilo; Solfanelli, Francesco.
Certification is an essential feature in organic farming, and it is based on inspections to verify compliance with respect to European Council Regulation—EC Reg. No 834/2007. A risk based approach to noncompliance that alerts the control bodies to activate planning inspections would contribute to a more efficient and cost-effective certification system. An analysis of factors that can affect the probability of noncompliance in organic farming has thus been developed. This article examines the application of zero-inflated count data models to farmlevel panel data from inspection results and sanctions obtained from the Ethical and Environmental Certification Institute, one of the main control bodies in Italy. We tested many a priori hypotheses related to the...

Consumption of Organic Foods from a Life History Perspective:An Explorative Study among Italian consumers Organic Eprints
Naspetti, Simona; Zanoli, Raffaele; Bracchi, Luca.
Taking into consideration individuals’ cognitive reasoning, and assuming that consumption of organic food has involved a change of mind about food experiences and food habits, we have identified the concepts, stories and theories mentioned by respondents in their discourses about organic food. Regular consumers trust organic products because they believe that they are healthier and tastier than any other product. A growing stock of information supports their food choice and confidence in organic food. Occasional consumers have strong beliefs about the better taste and the higher quality of organic food in general. Non organic users sometimes perceive organic food as a new fashion, the last fad. Organic food is still confused with close ‘substitutes’, such...

Quality aspects of processed organic baby food - Results of a case study from an expert consultation in the baby food industry in 10 European countries. Organic Eprints
Seidel, Kathrin; Kretzschmar, Ursula; Zanoli, Raffaele.
The processor survey shows the general principles and understanding of quality for the processing of organic food from the processors’ point of view. In addition, possible problem areas regarding the question of product quality such as raw material, processing techniques, storage etc. are worked out. The results of the survey support the identification and definition of critical and essential control points as well as product quality parameters. This survey can therefore conclude three points of actions to improve the process quality. - Handling of raw material: transportation, storage, pre-processing - Nutritional, safety and sensory QCCP - Cooking: time and temperature - Nutritional and sensory QCCP - Preserving/ sterilizations -...

A decision network for inspections in organic farms in Italy Organic Eprints
Gambelli, Danilo; Zanoli, Raffaele; Solfanelli, Francesco.
Inspections in organic farming systems are the key tool to assure reliability of the organic business and detection of non-compliant operators. Supporting control bodies in the inspection procedure can increase the efficiency and competitiveness of the sector. Here we propose a decision support system for inspections based on Bayesian networks. Our model is based on statistical information taken from the archives of main Italian control body, and considers decision strategies according to the maximization of expected utility based on risk minimization. © 2012 The authors and IOS Press.

Strategies to improve quality and safety and reduce costs along the food supply chain Organic Eprints
Stolze, Matthias; Bahrdt, Katja; Bteich, Marie-Reine; Lampkin, Nicolas; Naspetti, Simona; Nicholas, Phillipa; Zanoli, Raffaele.
The paper aims at contributing to a better understanding of the linkage between supply chain performance and possible performance improvement with respect to food quality and safety. Therefore, the paper addresses the question whether the level of collaborative planning and close supply chain relationships could help improve quality and safety of organic supply chains. The three main weaknesses in the performance of European organic supply chains identified are high logistic and transport costs, the level of input costs and low expenditure on research and product development. While we found a high level of collaboration for information sharing, there is almost no collaboration with respect to joint decisions on optimal order quantity and inventory...
